The Censorship of Black Excellence
The word is spreading, BIPOC resources are having restricted access placed on them.
In the past weeks alone black businesses (moreover the ones who openly promote pro-black or anti-racist content) have been placed on what Instagram calls the "Shadow Ban List".
"An Instagram shadowban refers to the act of hiding or restricting a user's content without informing the user that it's happening. This typically occurs when a user has violated Instagram’s community guidelines — or the content is otherwise deemed inappropriate. If you're shadowbanned, your content won't appear on anyone's feed, Explore, or hashtag pages unless they already follow you."
This is just a sample of the attacks on our freedom of speech. Limiting the view of black social media accounts hinders businesses from growing, stunts the circulation of black dollars and intelligence. It makes it even harder to share valuable information with our community.
The state of Censorship in America right now is deeper than politician battles and Healthcare propaganda. It's also the refusal of BIPOC teachers in school. The misleading information on Critical Race Theory and laws against Culturally Responsive Teaching.
The Biden Administration recently announced to reduce inequities by infusing hundreds of billions of dollars into virtually every level of the education system. But what exactly does that look like at the local and state level where authorities feel threatened?
Even as President Biden’s American Families Plan includes $9 billion for teacher training, people will say that the leaks in the pipeline that keep people of color out of teaching—most especially Black men—must be put on hold while we meet the educational challenges of the pandemic. -educationpost.org
It's also the silencing of our herbalists and holistic practitioners. It's the poisoning and burnings of our farms. It is the restricted access to information...the banning of literature that embraces our culture...demeaning and defaming of our artistic creators. It is all of these tactics plus more.
The attack on our ability to self-govern is at an all-time high!
What does this mean for us?
While our resources are being silenced, there is alternative destructive propaganda being placed upon us.
A self-sufficient community cannot be controlled. BIPOC in America has definitely been able to prove time after time, that they can take care of themselves. From our beginnings, we could grow our own food and feed our own people, build our own homes, teach our own children, fund our own communities. Even as our freedom was stripped away, we still excelled.
Allowing others outside of our community to control the narrative affects our culture. It weakens our unity by undermining our strengths and talents. Misinformation taints the minds and bodies of our children, our future.
What should we do?
Start at home.
Educate yourself and your family on the need for black business, resources, and leaders. Explain to your children how it affects their excellence.
Follow and Share these businesses and resources with family and friends. Any and all support goes a long way. Like a status, share a promotion, save posts for later, or join a live stream. The more we share and support our community, the more connected we are, the more resources we'll have, the stronger we will be.
